Gene of Interest

The gene of interest is the DNA sequence researchers want to investigate, express, or manipulate. It may encode a protein, a fluorescent reporter, a regulatory RNA, or another functional genetic element.

The surrounding regulatory sequences influence how the gene is expressed and whether the resulting product can be detected or characterized.
